How do I know when I will be able to retire?

There is no simple formula for this one.
Definitely seek help from a professional. You wouldn't remove your own appendix, would you?

Here's an example: let's say you can safely live on 3% of your nest egg per year. However, if that nest egg is invested in something that could go down 50% in a year, you may be in trouble.

Plan your retirement in Stages.
If you plan early enough you should be able to spend down your retirement say from age 65 to 80 or 85. Using not only your income but the principal as well. The principal should be invested as to minimize the risk of loss as you would be using annually. Once the funds are used then move on to plan B. If you don't have a backup plan then give me a call and I can help set up a retirement strategy that will allow you to spend down the principal.

Knowing when you are able to retire
You definitely need to speak with a QUALIFIED Financial Planner. They can evaluate where you are now, and what work you need to do to get to your goals. No one size fits all plan will work for you.
