Are there investments other than mutual funds that I should be using?

Quality Real Estate is very affordable at this timePrices for credit tenanted real estate have not been this low for many years. Long term leases on properties leased for 10 years or more requiring little or no owner/landlord management are available in many areas. Financing for such properties at historically low rates is also available with 25% equity (or lower). These are ideal investments for professionals to place into an investment and/or retirement account.

Alternatives to Mutual FundsThere are many different alternatives -- but many come with different types of risk -- you need to talk with a QUALIFIED Financial Advisor to make sure that the risks are appropriate for you. Some of these include -- Structured Products (Accelerated Return Notes, etc) and specific alternative investments.
A recent Alternative (that just closed) - invested in Commercial Real Estate distressed debt. Good thing with this type of investment, rather then choosing a commerical property on your own, the firm that does this has the expertise and experience that you probably do not have to choose a high quality investment.

Consider Variable Annuities
A variable annuity is part investment and part insurance. Annuities have a growth component plus guarantees..........GMIB and GMWB are riders which can be added for a small fee. Some annuities still offer a doubling in value in 10 years for income purposes.
